In Late October of 2014, we opened the “Smoke House.” After 3 years of offering our BBQ out of our Butcher Shop, we took the advice of our fans and patrons and decided to expand!
Located right next door to the original store, we custom designed the space with a full bar featuring Bourbon, Whiskey and Moonshine as well as select Craft Beers.
The bar and all the tables were built using reclaimed red and white cedar wood from a dismantled water tower in Green Point Brooklyn. The rest of the store was built using the motto, “Reclaim, Reuse, Restore.” We purchased most of the building materials from our friends at “Build It Green,” located right in Astoria.

Born and raised in Astoria, this Queens native’s main passion is food.
Having travelled the world in the pursuit of great tasting food among other things, his mission was to bring it all back to his hood. He started his first restaurant Pita Pan in 2003, which has become a classic, offering the tastiest and freshest Greek cuisine this side of the Atlantic.
Butcher Bar’s inspiration came from a trip to Morocco, where he dined at several restaurant/butcher shops, which guaranteed that the meat specialties prepared there where extremely fresh. He also wanted to expand his endeavors to the purveyor side and supply his restaurants with good meat.
Grass-fed beef and pasture raised animals were the only kind he wanted to dine on and wanted to share this with his friends and family in Astoria. He brought up his idea to his then manager of Pita Pan, Kathy and they began their journey of awareness and education.
A space became available across the street from Pita Pan, and he began to design his new concept. He chose to do Smokehouse BBQ because it was not being represented properly in Astoria, and wanted a way to showcase the meat. Organic and natural vegetables and meat locally sourced from sustainable minded purveyors and farms.
He hopes to one day start a farm in Astoria.
After several years as a teacher in Astoria, Kathy became aware of how many of her young students were obese, and believed this was due to their poor eating habits and lack of nutritional education. Their health was being affected directly from their food intake.
After reading the book “Food Inc.,” she answered the call to arms. This was the starting point for a journey that has culminated into Butcher Bar.
She and her partners wanted to know where their food was coming from. How it was farmed and grown. The idea of an animal’s rights became important. No not Orwell’s “Animal farm,” but a respect for animals that give their lives to feed us. Pasture raised and fed what nature intended them to eat. They wanted to know what exactly goes into our food. How it was produced and how it’s cooked.
Along with her own education she wanted to share it with her community in Astoria, and offer options unavailable to those residents there. She continues to learn every day and shares that love of knowledge with all of those that patronize the butcher shop/smokehouse.
Born and raised in Austin, Texas, Orlando had never heard of Astoria and Queens was a place only familiar to him in Eddie Murphy’s “Coming to America.”
Classically trained in one of Austin’s top culinary programs at ACC, his passion is classic Southern BBQ. His desire was to evolve his favorite classic BBQ dishes and infuse them with his new found culinary knowledge.
He has worked at Texas legend – Uncle Billy’s – and moved to New York City to bring his style up North. Upon arrival he landed a job at Mable’s Smokehouse in Williamsburg, but yearned to cook his style of BBQ. A chance meeting with Kathy and Matthew one night in a bar, and a couple beers later, and the rest as they say is BBQ history.
Orlando’s hard work was recently recognized by restaurant review titan Zagat, when he was listed in their “30 under 30 Up and Coming Restaurant Stars.” Butcher Bar also received high honors by Zagat. They were given the title of best BBQ in Queens in 2012. Austin and Astoria are both proud.
